Air Products CryoEase® Services designed a supplied a high pressure, high purity pipework system for Science City at the University of Birmingham as part of the Hydrogen Energy Project, which researches how hydrogen energy can be generated, stored and used as a power source in buildings and transport.
Specifically, pipework systems have been provided for the projects biomass reactor and hydrogen refuelling stations.
This project required the design of installation of 300 Bar tungum and stainless steel pipework for the biomass reactor and refuelling stations that took into consideration the flammability and low molecular size problems associated with hydrogen.
This included the installation of a secure storage compound for the "green" hydrogen and distribution pipework to a hydrogen refuelling station.
Timescales were especially tight, and through close working with the University's Estates Engineering Department, site SHE management and Air Products, the University of Birmingham became the first hydrogen refuelling station in the UK.
