Forced Bed Aeration™ (FBA™) is a technology designed to enhance the performance of wetlands for the treatment of high-strength wastewaters.

Derived from the United States, the FBA™ system forces air through a series of pipes in a wetland system. This increases the available oxygen, thereby increasing the treatment capacity.

FBA™ reed beds can reach a performance that has not been obtainable in passive treatment reed beds.

Forced aeration can be applied to both horizontal and vertical flow reed beds.

Applications

  • Sewage, agricultural wastewater, petrochemicals, landfill leachate, surface run-off containing glycol from airport de-icing, groundwater remediation.
  • Can be retrofitted to existing wetland systems.

Benefits

  • Stand-alone solution for high-strength wastewaters high in BOD, ammonia and other contaminants.
  • Can be deeper than conventional reed beds, thereby taking up less space.
  • Plants thrive because the oxygen pumped prevents the formation of toxic products that can stunt plant growth in strongly anaerobic, passive systems.
  • Reed beds can be divided into aerobic and anoxic zones for nitrification / denitrification.
  • Aeration prolongs the life of the reed bed and enhances the effluent treatment, by increasing the available oxygen per m2 by up to 15 times compared to passive systems.
