Challenge

The objective for this project was to enhance the performance of Wet Cooling Towers so that steel production capacity could be increased.

The construction and operation of wet cooling towers require the use of efficient fill pack, drift eliminators and air inlet louvres.

PLASdek™ was selected to achieve the process cooling productivity enhancements needed, namely high working temperatures, low fouling and durability.

Solution

Working in partnership with Cooling Parts & Services Ltd (cps™), 2H produced a bespoke configuration for the tower fill which made the most of the heat transfer capabilities and versatility of the full range of PLASdek™ polypropylene (PP) fill packs.

As operating temperatures were already up to around 80°C - close to the limit for standard PVC fill packs - PLASdek was the ideal choice as the high working temperatures which can be achieved using PP fill significantly improve heat transfer ability.

Outcome

By combining cross-fluted and vertical-fluted PLASdek packs, 2H's design addressed the thermal and low fouling objectives stipulated for this project. The combination of angled and channel foils in one pack type promotes intensive mixing of the process water and air flow which delivers efficient heat transfer performance whilst also causing sufficient turbulence within the pack to discourage fouling.

Another advantage of PLASdek’s PP construction is in providing additional foil thickness for similar pack weight. Because the packs are inherently more robust, they’re not only stronger in normal operation but are also less prone to being damaged, for example during routine maintenance.
