As you can imagine, there is a huge quantity of water used by cement batching plants. However, water storage for cement batching plants is closely regulated and cement plant operators need to be aware of the WRAS requirements for backflow protection.

Known as Fluid Category 5 or FC5, the scheme was put in place by The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) to reduce waste, misuse, undue consumption or contamination of the water supply.

Water storage tanks for cement batching plants should be protected with backflow prevention through the use of an ‘air gap’. These are typically built on the water tanks themselves using what we call a weir or an interrupter or by means of a separate air gap. Below is a diagram of the basic function of an air gap with weir overflow.

The ‘gap’ simply acts as a break in the water flow. This is there so that should there be a loss of water pressure the water cannot flow back up the water supply and potentially contaminate the fresh water lines.
