Bio Thelys is a batch process combining thermal hydrolysis and anaerobic digestion for the reduction of sludge volumes. Bio Thelys™ can handle all kinds of organic, industrial or municipal sludge, including those containing fat, oil and grease.

Benefits

Performance

Compared to a conventional digestion system, pre-treating sludge with the Bio Thelys™ process can produce:

  • 25 to 35% less dry matter
  • 30 to 50% more biogas
  • No odours
  • A pasteurised digestate, for safe agricultural reuse.

Process

Primary and secondary sludges are subjected to a high temperature and pressure (165°C and 9bar) for a period of 30 minutes. During thermal hydrolysis, the cellular structure of sludge and high molecular weight organic materials are broken down, producing a more readily biodegradable liquid sludge.

Downstream, the biodegradable matter is usually treated using anaerobic digestion.

The process can be set up in three different configurations with whole or partial treatment of the sludge prior to digestion or with a sludge recirculation loop between the hydrolysis reactor and the digester.
