ARM Reedbeds, a top UK specialist in natural wastewater treatment, has won a prestigious Green Apple Environment Award. The company, based in Rugeley, Staffordshire, took home the gold in the utilities category for its innovative work with Essex & Suffolk Water at the Hanningfield Water Treatment Works (HWTW) near Chelmsford.
ARM competed against 500 other nominees and was one of three companies shortlisted, ultimately securing the top spot in its category. The Green Apple Environment Awards celebrate Britain’s most environmentally conscious companies, councils, and communities.
The award was presented at a special ceremony at the House of Commons, where over 400 guests gathered to honor the winners. Tori Sellers, a director at ARM, highlighted the significance of their project: “The natural wastewater treatment system at Hanningfield is the first in the world to treat drinking water sludges. It’s an innovative, eco-friendly method with low operational costs and significant environmental benefits, including saving 70 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.”
The success of this groundbreaking system, which requires sludge removal only once every 20 years, demonstrates the potential of natural wastewater systems as the future of sustainable water treatment. ARM's achievement has also earned them the opportunity to publish their winning project in The Green Book, an international reference on environmental best practices, inspiring others globally.
The Hanningfield Water Treatment Works project is a pioneering effort, setting a new standard for sustainable drinking water solutions in the UK.
