Context

Hyndburn WwTW serves an estimated population of 114,000 in the Great Harwood area of Blackburn, Lancashire. During a £12m process improvement project at the site, Aquasystems International NV was asked to investigate mixing requirements at the start of the eight-aerator lane. The purpose of the investigation was to determine how the WwTW could improve its process with regard to nitrification.

Solution

A contract was undertaken to supply eight 5.5kW submersible mixers from the Aquaturbo® MIX-GS range. The contract also included installation and commissioning services, and was led by main contractor Amey Construction Ltd.

Products supplied

There were several major reasons for selecting the Aquaturbo® MIX-GS:

  • they do not 'rag up' compared with other mixers
  • they operate at a much lower speed, resulting in significant energy savings
  • require minimal maintenance
  • can be installed in situ without having to stop the process or empty the ASP tanks
