The centrifuge is a mechanical separation technology that uses accelerated rotation to separate out substances of different densities. These will be either a solid and a liquid or two immiscible liquids, such as water and oil. Read More

The most common type used in industry is the horizontal decanter centrifuge . These tend to be able to operate continuously, processing anywhere between 10 and 200 cubic metres per hour.

They are often used to dewater and thicken sludges in wastewater treatment processes. Reducing the weight and volume of the sludge significantly lowers disposal costs.

Other applications include removing fats, oils and starches from liquid streams in food processing, and removing fine solids from slurries generated during oil drilling or chemical production.

The other place centrifuges are widely used is in laboratories . Various designs are available, including microcentrifuges, clinical centrifuges and ultracentrifuges. Some have refrigeration systems to keep the sample temperature constant.
