They are typically installed in mixing tanks, activated sludge tanks, equalisation basins, sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) and aerated lagoons.

Fine bubble aerators are installed on the floor of a treatment tank, usually in a grid format. Millions of air bubbles rise from the diffusers, sustaining the aerobic processes. Disc, tube, plate and dome are all types of fine bubble aerator.

Mechanical aerators use an impeller, brush or rotor to agitate the wastewater, increasing oxygen transfer from the atmosphere. They are usually fixed to a side wall or overhead bridge, but can also be installed as floating units.

With submerged models, air or oxygen is delivered through a hose to the aerator and distributed by the rotation of the impeller.

Aerating fountains destratify water in ponds and lakes, helping improve improve overall water quality.
