Burkert produced a welding cooling system that was adopted as a standard fitting on all welding robots at Magna System Chassis in France - part of Magna International, a global, brand-independent, engineering and manufacturing partner to automotive manufacturers.
From January 2007, 160 Burkert cooling systems were installed on Magna assembly lines. They guaranteed zero leakage in the event of welding cap loss.
They were based on a unique design that employed an optical paddlewheel to detect the water flow rate returning from the robot. If the flow rate fell below a set point, an alarm triggered the robot controller to stop.
As well as preventing downtime and contamination, the design ensured that the optical paddlewheel was not affected by the temperature of the water. It was also non-magnetic and unaffected by ferrous particles in the water.
The cooling system units were pre-calibrated before fitting. They gave clear displays of actual system flow rates and alarm set-points, providing transparency and flexibility in operation for the user.
