Challenge

2H Water Technologies was contracted to provide filter media for an update to the secondary treatment system at a large municipal sewage treatment works.

Solution

The project required 21,000 cubic metres of BIOdek™ plastic structured cross flow media for the secondary trickle filters. The contract specifed environmental protection measures so the media was constructed using polypropylene (PP) instead of PVC.

The change of material prevented the use of 120 tonnes of solvent required to chemically weld the PVC from entering the atmosphere on the site, and 19,000kg of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere from the electricity needed to generate the electrical power required to run four gluing machines and their associated ventilation systems.

2H used its own unique welding manufacturing process that enables welded onsite assembly of PP media rather than gluing. This process contributed to the environmental aims of the project as well as reducing the manufacturing costs.

The company's approach also reduced carbon footprint of the project, which would have required the use of over 300 delivery trucks if on-site assembly had not been possible. This would have produced around 89,300kg of carbon dioxide.
