Challenge
The Tadcaster wastewater treatment works (WwTW) treats effluent from the local brewery and also some of the municipal waste.
In 2015, a major refurbishment was carried out at the works by AECOM, on behalf of Yorkshire Water.
The main project involved the refurbishment of 7 x 5.5kW Aquaturbo floating aerators. In addition, three new units of the same size were required as an alternative to the current pure oxygen treatment method, which had to be replaced due to H & S concerns.
An existing final settlement tank was converted to an activated sludge process (ASP) by AECOM, and the tank had to be overhauled due to the high water table in the area.
Arup partners were involved in the consultancy as the work had to take place during the ongoing operation of the existing plant. The project involved a number of months of planning and implementation process with the client. All the aerators were installed in situ and commissioned within a few days without any disruption to the existing plant.
Work done
Aquasystems International NV refurbished 7 x 5.5kW Aquaturbo Floating Aerators from Yorkshire Water and supplied 3 new Aquaturbo 5.5kW AER-AS units, plus one standby aerator, which were installed in January 2016 together with electrical control panels and cabling.
Outcome
A spokesman for AECOM commented that "all parties involved are extremely pleased with the performance of Aquaturbo floating aerators during this extensive refurbishment programme at The Tadcaster works. The works has met its consent due to the additional aeration capacity provided by Aquasystems International NV".
