- GEMÜ 537 manually-operated globe valve
- GEMÜ B42 pneumatically-operated ball valve
In 2023 GEMÜ started focusing on increasing its visibility in the emerging hydrogen sector and consolidating its presence in this important growing industry.
As part of this effort, GEMÜ is developing its product range to satisfy the requirements for numerous hydrogen applications, including:
water treatment for electrolysis processes
gas treatment for processing or storage
Electrolysis in hydrogen production
Electrolysis is a crucial step in hydrogen production and requires a great deal of treated water and electrical current.
Drawing on its many years of experience in this sector, GEMÜ is an active participant in various hydrogen projects around the world.
Electrolysis project example
A prominent example is the Electrolysis made in Baden-Württemberg development project, wherein GEMÜ worked with the Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff-Forschung Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) in Stuttgart to successfully implement a system with an impressive electrolysis output of up to 1 megawatt.
Hydrogen is demanding on valves
Hydrogen as a medium places stringent requirements on valves. Above all, the small molecular size of the volatile gas quickly becomes a challenge when selecting materials.
GEMÜ valve solutions
GEMÜ provides expertise advice to guide customers in selecting the right valve to ensure correct choices of material and corresponding approvals.
For this project, high-quality GEMÜ globe valves and ball valves were used.
The GEMÜ 537 manually-operated globe valve was chosen with a special handwheel in accordance with ATEX requirements.
The GEMÜ B42 pneumatically-operated ball valve with ATEX was used in the project in different sizes and some with oil- and grease-free assembly, cleaned on the medium side to avoid contamination.
GEMÜ valves, measurement and control systems play a decisive role in this project and others similar to it. For example, GEMÜ plastic diaphragm valves and flowmeters have been successfully used in offshore hydrogen electrolysis projects in France, as have GEMÜ valves in a large-scale project for water treatment via ion exchangers.
Hydrogen in transport fuel cells
Hydrogen applications extend across various sectors, including fuel cells in the transport sector.
A project for heat management in fuel cells for trains used butterfly valves supplied by GEMÜ - the results won over an established fuel cell manufacturer.
GEMÜ is an active participant in the Hydrogen economy
To further promote transformation towards a hydrogen industry, GEMÜ is a member of international associations such as Hydrogen Europe and regional platforms such as H2BW.
GEMÜ also took part in international hydrogen trade fairs in 2023, including Hydrogen Live in the UK, the H2 Hydrogen Expo South America 2023 in Brazil, and the Hydrogen Technology Expo in Germany.
GEMÜ is proud of the projects that have already been successfully implemented in the hydrogen sector and looks to the future with confidence. The valve specialist continues its efforts to offer innovative solutions in the hydrogen sector and to actively contribute to creating a sustainable future.
