StormBrake™ is a vortex flow control system developed by FP McCann for stormwater drainage applications. Designed to manage surface water run-off in urban environments, the unit uses vortex hydrodynamics to control flow rates without moving parts. It limits discharge rates by creating a vortex that reduces flow energy, helping to manage peak run-off and reduce upstream storage requirements. It also lowers the risk of blockages when compared to traditional orifice plate systems.
Features and benefits
Regulates stormwater discharge rates using vortex-induced flow
Reduces required upstream storage volume
Minimises risk of blockage due to larger openings compared to orifice plates
Operates without mechanical or electrical parts
Applications
Urban drainage systems
Stormwater attenuation schemes
Surface water management in new developments
Retrofit drainage upgrades
Materials
Made from stainless steel or corrosion-resistant composite materials depending on project requirements.
Options and variations
Multiple sizes and configurations to meet specified discharge rates and site conditions. Custom sizing is supported.
Installation
Can be installed within standard manhole chambers. Specific installation method varies depending on site constraints and design flow requirements.
Maintenance
Low maintenance due to absence of moving parts. Regular inspection is recommended to ensure inlet and outlet paths remain clear.
Technical support
FP McCann provides a StormBrake™ Calculator to support discharge rate design and can offer project-specific technical guidance.
