The Background
Siltbuster’s specialists are supporting the principal contractor of a major UK road schemes, ensuring the project stays in consent while significant earth-moving works are carried out.
The project for one of the UK’s largest infrastructure providers includes the creation of new dual carriageways, junctions and road realignment. It includes more than 700,000 cubic metres of earth moving activities as a section of the route is being placed through an area of high ground.
The Challenge
The scale of the earthworks means there is a significant amount of clay or otherwise dense sub-soil being exposed, which poses a risk of contamination of run-off water, especially during times of wet weather. This wastewater is collected in lagoons on site and without treatment, suspended solids in the water would follow pathways into local watercourses.
Siltbuster, working with pumping specialists Selwood, a sister company in the Workdry International Group, were tasked with implementing a solution that would minimise environmental impact of the project and ensure the client remained within the requirements of its discharge consent.
The Solution
Siltbuster specified and installed modular water treatment solutions at three key strategic points along the route, focusing on high-risk areas.
Selwood pumps feed wastewater from the lagoons into each Siltbuster system, providing a combined capacity of up to 300m³/h:
1. A high-flow iCDS chemical dosing system, MT30 Mix Tank, and three HB50MR lamella clarifiers capable of treating 150m³/h.
2. A standard-flow iCDS chemical dosing system, MT20 Mix Tank, and two HB50MR lamella clarifiers treating 100m³/h.
3. An MT8 unit with integrated dosing and one HB50MR clarifier providing an additional 50m³/h
The Result
The client now has the ability to clean and discharge water at three key locations across the scheme, significantly reducing the environmental impact of the works and the risk of fines for non-compliance.
The combined Siltbuster and Selwood approach provided a joined-up solution for pumping, treatment, and discharge, delivering operational efficiency and peace of mind for the client.
The Selwood and Siltbuster teams continue to support the project as it progresses.
