Submerged aerated media plant can deal with much higher loadings per cubic metre of tank volume than an activated sludge plant. No daily checks are required on the mixed liquor solids volume.
Submerged aerated media plant uses plastic media with a very high surface area on which a high density of bacterial culture grows. A settlement tank is required to separate dead bacteria, which leave the media, but the level of solids is much less than with an activated sludge plant.
With careful design, this type of plant can give results similar to a membrane bioreactor, but with much less maintenance.
