Penstocks are typically mounted in a wall, a channel or a weir.

Rectangular and square penstocks are common, although circular penstocks are also available.

They are usually specified in mild steel or grade 304 or 316 stainless steel, depending on the severity of the conditions. Cast iron is also used.

They may be operated manually by a handwheel, square cap, or automated via a gearbox or actuator.
