Forced Bed Aeration™ (FBA™) is an innovative technology that improves wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands. It significantly increases the removal of contaminants and ensures more consistent performance. Developed in the USA by Naturally Wallace, FBA™ can be applied to horizontal and vertical flow wetlands.
By aerating the wetland, FBA™ enhances oxygen levels, which boosts the system's treatment capacity by up to 15 times. This technology is particularly effective for treating wastewater with high levels of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), suspended solids (SS), ammonia (NH4-N), and other organic pollutants.
With FBA™, constructed wetlands can achieve much higher performance than traditional systems, with less variability in results. Aerating both horizontal and vertical flow reed beds offers many benefits:
Faster and more consistent treatment
By adding oxygen to the wetland, FBA™ boosts the activity of beneficial microorganisms that break down pollutants. This allows the system to treat wastewater more quickly and consistently.Better pollutant removal
The added oxygen helps remove a wider range of pollutants, including nitrogen, pathogens, and heavy metals, making the system more versatile.Handles variable loads
FBA™ systems can adapt to changes in the amount of wastewater, making them ideal for places with seasonal or irregular use.Space-saving design
Because FBA™ increases the efficiency of the treatment process, it allows for a more compact wetland design, requiring less space than traditional systems.Reduced clogging
The constant motion created by aeration prevents particles and solids from settling, reducing the risk of clogging.Efficient energy use
Although FBA™ requires power, it can use low-energy pumps, making it a potentially efficient choice.Natural aesthetic
FBA™ systems can be designed to blend into natural landscapes, adding green space and enhancing the beauty of the area.
