Challenge

Having already supplied a number of trickling filter solutions on various wastewater sites in Scotland, 2H Water was approached by Scottish Water Solutions.

They needed to treat effluent from the city of Stranraer and protect the shell fish farming in Loch Ryan.

Solution

The process design expertise provided by 2H Water assisted the client in identifying the Trickling Filter solution as providing the low cost and low carbon footprint option to deliver treatment to achieve the required discharge level.

Having identified the best solution, 2H Water then worked closely with Scottish Water's consultants and contractors to optimise the Trickling Filter design with regard to media type, tank and distributor specification.

Once the design phase was completed 2H Water was entrusted with the contract to supply, deliver, install and commission the two Trickling Filters on site.

2H provided the following:

  • 2750m3 of BIOdek 19mm polypropylene modular crossflow media with 150m2/m3 specific surface area.
  • 2 no epoxy coated filter shells, each 27.5m diameter with BIOdek media packed to a depth of 2.4m.
  • 2 no rotary open trough distributors c/w speed control systems.
  • 2 no sets of engineering brick media supports.

Outcome

  • Installation was completed ahead of programme.
  • Treatment of the influent was achieved exceeding the works effluent quality specified for discharge.
  • The design ensured gravity flow through the works, saving pumping costs.
  • The low power consumption required for Trickling Filters also contributed to reducing power requirements across the works.

The method of production and assembly of the BIOdek media combined with the above points resulted in an overall low carbon solution.

Furthermore, the client benefited from a performance guarantee provided by 2H Water.
