The best level measurement technology for a specific application will depend on:
- what’s being measured (e.g. water or granular solid)
- where it’s being measured (e.g. open watercourse or enclosed tank)
- the process environment (e.g. temperature, pressure and turbulence) and,

Ultrasonic systems provide non-contact level measurement. They can operate continuously, although the high frequency sound waves they use can be affected by foaming, surface debris and humidity levels.

Guided wave radar is a contact system where the probe extends to the bottom of the tank. It uses high-frequency electromagnetic waves. Unlike ultrasonic systems GWR is unaffected by process conditions within the vessel.

Capacitive systems send a radio frequency (RF) signal between the probe and the vessel wall. Variations in the current that flows between the two is used to determine the level of the material being measured.

Conductivity switches are point level systems that are simple to install and operate. A low-voltage current is applied between two electrodes. When both are immersed in a conductive liquid, a circuit is formed.

Hydrostatic systems determine level by measuring the pressure generated by a column of liquid of known density within a tank. They are used where surface conditions, such as foaming, prevent the use of other technologies.

Float switches, vibrating probes, radiometric systems and magnetostriction are other technologies to consider.
