The best flowmeter for a specific application will depend on:
- what’s being measured (e.g. air or granular solids)
- the nature of the fluid (e.g. viscosity, turbidity, aggressive chemicals)
- where it’s being measured (e.g. open channel or enclosed pipe)
- the process environment (e.g. temperature and pressure), and
- what information is required and what will be done with the data. Read More

Ultrasonic flowmeters have no moving parts, and use ultrasound pulses to measure velocity. Transit time meters are best for clean fluids, whilst doppler meters are for slurries or turbulent fluids.

Electromagnetic flowmeters also have no moving parts. They are suited to conductive liquids and sludges as they measure the voltage created when a liquid passes through a magnetic field.

Turbine flowmeters offer high accuracy measurement of clean fluids. The liquid or gas flowing through the meter drives a turbine, and the rate of rotation is used to automatically calculate the flow.

Variable area flowmeters are simple yet versatile instruments that give a visual reading. Direct reading models are used with a specific liquid and give the flow rate in specified engineering units; correlated models can be used with different liquids and require a correlation table to determine the flow.

Many other flow measurement technologies are available, including magnetic, coriolis, gear, mass, paddle and positive displacement systems.
